Senator Chris Gebhard (R-48) has called on Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday to investigate what he describes as a pattern of organized and targeted political violence in the state. In a letter sent today, Gebhard cited recent incidents affecting Pennsylvanians and government officials.
“Over the past few years, our commonwealth and nation have been rocked by consistent politically motivated acts of violence, which violate the rule of law and our sacred democratic principles,” Gebhard stated. “We must do more to protect our citizens and government officials who are simply trying to perform their duties. The recent targeted attack of two National Guardsman in our nation’s capital is the latest example of this violence.”
Gebhard’s letter points to an increase in antisemitism and attacks against federal officials, referencing high-profile incidents such as the assassination of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University and the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania.
He also noted that following Hamas’ attack on October 7, 2023, there was a significant rise in violations against Jewish residents and students within Pennsylvania. Data from the Anti-Defamation League shows that antisemitic incidents rose by over 300% between 2022 and 2024.
The letter highlighted a reported increase in violent attacks against immigration enforcement officers. According to information from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, assaults against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers increased by 830% compared to the previous year. There have also been coordinated efforts to expose personal information about ICE officers and their families—known as doxxing—which puts them at further risk.
Additionally, Gebhard mentioned attacks on two pro-life organizations in Philadelphia after the Supreme Court’s decision in Jackson Women’s Health Organization v. Dobbs.
In his request to Attorney General Sunday, Gebhard asked for an investigation into funding sources linked to political violence, review of existing intelligence on related organizations, and enhanced protective measures for ICE personnel and community members.
Gebhard has introduced Senate Bill 1021 aimed at increasing penalties for crimes committed against federal immigration enforcement officers working in Pennsylvania.
“The safety of our law enforcement personnel, the protection of civil rights and the integrity of our democratic institutions depend on swift and thorough action,” said Gebhard.
