The House of Representatives has passed H.Res. 364, the Gold Shield Families Resolution, introduced by Congressman Dan Meuser (PA-09). This bipartisan resolution, approved during National Police Week, acknowledges the families of fallen first responders as “Gold Shield Families” and encourages local communities to support nonprofit organizations that assist these families in dealing with their loss.

Congressman Meuser emphasized the importance of public safety and the role of first responders in maintaining it. “Of all the priorities we face in Congress, none is more fundamental than ensuring public safety and protecting human life,” he stated. He highlighted the sacrifices made by police officers, firefighters, EMTs, correction officers, and dispatchers.

Meuser also shared his personal connection to the issue: “As the son of a police officer and the grandson of a firefighter, I’ve seen the risks they take and the sacrifices their families quietly endure.”

The resolution draws inspiration from Camp Freedom in Carbondale, Pennsylvania. The nonprofit provides outdoor healing experiences for disabled veterans, first responders, and their families. Matt Guedes, Executive Director of Camp Freedom, explained why this resolution is vital: “First responders run toward danger—and many of them do it as volunteers or on a modest income.” He noted that while community gestures like spaghetti dinners are appreciated, they are insufficient for families who have lost loved ones.

Guedes added that recognition is just the beginning: “This resolution is so important because it recognizes those families and helps direct attention and resources to where they’re truly needed.”

Camp Freedom has supported over 12,000 veterans and first responder families nationwide. Congressman Meuser acknowledged Bill Bachenberg’s leadership at Camp Freedom in making this mission possible.

“This resolution may be just two pages long—but its message is powerful,” concluded Meuser. He urged communities to recognize Gold Shield Families’ sacrifices and provide ongoing support.
