HARRISBURG – A $250,000 grant awarded this week to the Lebanon County Redevelopment Authority will help develop a community center benefiting those seeking social services in greater Palmyra, according to Rep. Russ Diamond (R-Lebanon).
The 21,000-square-foot center in the 800-900 block of East Broad Street will feature a dozen apartments, a Caring Cupboard for food distributions, and an open space planned for use by organizations conducting seminars and screenings for health and wellness.
The Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency awarded $250,000 in funding that originated from Marcellus Shale impact fees and realty transfer taxes.
“We’ve experienced ever-increasing demand for services in Lebanon County. This grant will go a long way toward bolstering those resources,” Diamond said. “I look forward to seeing the completed project and all of the good it will do for area residents who need a helping hand.”
Twelve one-bedroom apartments serving as affordable housing units are planned as part of the project.
“Particularly during this time of volatility in the rental market, individuals and families are seeking safe housing that they won’t be immediately priced out of. This additional housing will be much appreciated by those with established ties to the community,” Diamond said.
Land donated for the project in 2020 has facilitated The Caring Cupboard’s goal to expand and impact families in a respectful, innovative manner.
“There aren’t a whole lot of projects that look like this. We’re excited to be at the forefront of innovation to meet the needs of our neighbors,” said Shila Ulrich, executive director of The Caring Cupboard.
