A student essay contest is being launched for Pennsylvania high school students as part of the state’s America250 celebrations, Rep. Russ Diamond (R-Lebanon) said on May 8. The initiative will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States and invites students to reflect on the nation’s founding ideals.

The contest is connected to a ceremonial session of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 9 at Congress Hall in Philadelphia. Each House district will select one student to represent their community at this event, which aims to highlight the legislative branch’s role and promote youth involvement in government.

“This anniversary offers a valuable moment for students to consider our nation’s founding ideals and how they continue to shape our lives today,” Diamond said. “I encourage students to take part, share their viewpoints, and engage in this meaningful civic opportunity.”

Students who are rising juniors or seniors residing in the 102nd District can participate by submitting an essay about America’s founding principles by June 1. Educators and school administrators are encouraged to inform eligible students about this opportunity and support their participation.

The municipalities included in the 102nd District are Annville, Bethel, East Hanover, Heidelberg, Jackson, Millcreek, North Annville, North Londonderry, Swatara and Union townships as well as Cleona, Jonestown, Myerstown, Palmyra and Richland boroughs.

Diamond represents the 102nd Legislative District in Lebanon County and serves as Republican chair of the Gaming Oversight Committee. He has advocated for tax reductions and government transparency during his tenure and received a Public Service Achievement Award from Common Cause of Pennsylvania according to the official website.

Constituents can submit essays via email or call with questions regarding participation.
